Hike & Trek Planning: Walking Times, Elevation, Daylight, Water & Pack Weight

Plan a fictional three-day hut-to-hut trek: leg tables, walking times with a pace rule, a slope pace curve, daylight and turnaround times, water and food, pack weight, a stage split and a route card with an elevation profile, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Total the first day of a fictional hut-to-hut trek, carry the altitude from leg to leg down to the hut and let a formula name the steepest climb.
  • Turn distance, ascent and descent into walking minutes with the club's fictional pace rule, add breaks and get the arrival time at every point and a readable h:mm label for the day.
  • Build a slope-dependent walking speed with EXP, turn it into minutes per km, compare it with the club's simple rule from −30 % to +30 % and chart both lines.
  • Test every day of the trek against a fictional sunset and the club's buffer, find the day that does not fit, work back to its latest start and set a fixed turnaround time for a side trip.
  • Look up water and energy per person-day from the club's fictional banded table, scale food to the group and work out how much water to carry between refill points on the hot day.
  • Split a gear list into base weight and consumables with SUMIFS, compare each hiker's pack with the club's fictional body-weight guideline and flag the packs that are too heavy.
  • Add up a draft stage plan per day with SUMIFS, test each day against two fictional limits with IF and OR, and work out the smallest number of days the limits allow.
  • Build day 2's route card: cumulative distance, total ascent and descent straight from the altitude profile, the highest point, a check cell and an elevation profile chart.

About this course

Most hiking trouble starts with an optimistic timetable. This course helps you plan routes with realistic numbers. You break the route into legs with distance, ascent and descent, then estimate walking time with a pace rule, breaks and arrival times. A smooth speed-versus-slope curve is compared with the simple rule to see where it matters. Daylight checks give finish times, the latest safe start and a turnaround time. You calculate water and food per person-day with refill points, track base weight and total pack weight against body weight and split a multi-day route into stages within agreed daily limits. The capstone produces a route card with an elevation profile. For hikers, trek leaders and outdoor clubs.
