Fluid Mechanics by the Numbers: Hydrostatics, Continuity, Bernoulli, Reynolds Number, Pipe Friction, Minor Losses, System Curves & Pump Operating Points
Follow water through pipes, fittings and a pump. You will compute pressure at depth, velocities from continuity, energy heads with Bernoulli, flow regimes from the Reynolds number, friction losses with an explicit friction-factor formula, losses in fittings and parallel branches, then intersect a system curve with a pump curve and price the energy, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Turn densities into specific weights, calculate the pressure at six depths in a water tank, convert gauge kPa into absolute bar and express a pressure reading as metres of oil head.
- Calculate the cross-section of six pipes, the velocity of the same flow in each, the speed-up behind a reducer and the mass flow through it.
- Calculate velocity heads, the total head at the pump outlet, the pressure at a raised point after a reducer and the flow through a venturi meter from its pressure difference.
- Fetch viscosities and densities from a fictional property table, calculate the Reynolds number of eight flow cases, label each regime with IFS and find the highest velocity that keeps an oil line laminar.
- Look up roughness values, calculate the relative roughness of six turbulent lines, their friction factor with the explicit Swamee–Jain formula and the Darcy–Weisbach head loss, and the laminar friction factor of an oil line.
- Add up the K-values of all fittings in a line, turn them into a head loss and an equivalent pipe length, and balance the flow between two parallel branches with a fixed number of correction steps.
- Tabulate the system curve and a fictional pump curve over a grid of flows, locate their crossing in the grid, calculate the exact operating point by formula and chart both curves.
- Calculate the hydraulic power at two operating points, read the pump efficiency from a fictional curve table, turn it into a yearly energy cost and chart energy against pipe cost to see which diameter is cheaper overall.
About this course
Picking a pipe or pump by gut feeling can waste energy for years. This course replaces guesswork with clear calculations on a fictional cooling loop. You work out pressure at depth, switch between kPa, bar and metres of water column and find velocities from pipe areas. Energy heads trade pressure against speed and height, and a venturi meter reveals the flow rate. A property table feeds the Reynolds number, which labels each flow laminar or turbulent before friction losses follow. Fittings add their own losses, two parallel branches share the flow, and the duty point appears where pump and system curves cross. Finally you compare running costs of two pipe sizes. For engineering students, technicians and plant planners.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
