About this course

When source code is gone or the compiler has transformed it beyond recognition, the machine code is the only truth, and this course teaches you to read it. Working in x86-64 on Linux, you get comfortable with the registers and how arguments and return values are passed, then write a tiny program that talks straight to the kernel with the write and exit syscalls. You study the instruction families that make up most code — data moves, arithmetic, comparisons and branches — and see how call and ret use the stack, which explains why a corrupted return address matters. Practical lessons have you disassemble binaries with objdump, step through them in gdb, and trace syscalls with strace to understand behaviour quickly. The final lesson takes the defensive angle on shellcode: recognising an execve payload and statically analysing an authorised sample, without ever executing it. Everything is local and lawful.
