About this course

Most critical software flaws come down to a program writing past the end of a buffer, and this course explains that failure clearly so you can prevent it. You begin with why C is so prone to these bugs, build a tiny toolchain around gcc, gdb and AddressSanitizer, and refresh how pointers and unchecked array indexing reach memory they should not. A diagram of the stack frame shows why overflowing a local buffer can overwrite the saved return address. You inspect a small teaching program, find the unbounded copy and replace it with a size-bounded one, watch a crash occur safely, and use a cyclic pattern to pinpoint the overflow during triage. Control-flow hijacking is explained to show why the bug is serious, deliberately without an exploit, and a closing lesson walks through canaries, NX, ASLR, PIE and FORTIFY. All practice is local and authorised.
