Data Structures by Hand: Arrays, Stacks, Queues & Ring Buffers, Linked Lists, Binary Heaps, Search Trees and Sorting Passes

Watch the classic data structures work, one operation per row. You will simulate a stack and a queue with pointer cells, wrap a ring buffer with MOD, follow next-pointers through a linked list, keep a binary heap in an array with parent and child indices, insert keys into a search tree, run bubble and insertion sort pass by pass and count the work each structure needs, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Read a value by its 0-based position, work out the memory address of an element from the start address and the element size, rebuild the array after an insert in the middle and count how many elements had to move.
  • Continue a log of pushes and pops, track the stack size after every step, find the value on top with MAXIFS and INDEX, and use the depth of a line of brackets to find the first close bracket that has no opener.
  • Run a fictional print queue stored in a ring buffer of five slots, move the tail and head pointers with MOD so they wrap around, count the jobs waiting and flag the moments when the buffer is full or empty.
  • Follow next-pointers through a sorted linked list whose nodes are scattered over eight slots, read the value at every step, find where a new value belongs and set its next-pointer with INDEX and MATCH, then compare the work with an array.
  • Read a min-heap stored in an array, calculate parent and child indices with INT and 2i + 1, then insert a new key at the end and sift it up round by round until its parent is smaller.
  • Calculate the level of every node in a small search tree, follow the path of comparisons that places a new key, and compare the average search steps with a degenerate tree built from sorted input.
  • Run bubble sort on six values pass by pass, count the swaps in each pass, count the shifts insertion sort needs for every element, and merge two sorted runs into one sorted list.
  • Turn n into the number of tree levels, multiply a fictional hourly workload by the toy step counts of four structures with SUMPRODUCT, name the structure with the fewest steps and chart the totals.

About this course

Data structures stick once you move every pointer yourself. In this course each operation becomes one row in a spreadsheet. You read arrays by zero-based index and count the shifts an insert causes, replay pushes and pops while tracking the top of a stack and check brackets. A queue wraps around a ring buffer with MOD and raises full and empty flags. You walk a linked list through its next pointers, keep a binary heap inside an array and sift new keys up, and follow the comparison path when a key enters a search tree. Bubble, insertion and merge steps come next, and the final lab picks the cheapest structure for a workload. For students and self-taught coders.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
