About this course
Return-oriented programming sounds mysterious until you build one yourself on a program made for learning. In this course you compile a small, deliberately vulnerable binary and discover why a buffer overflow alone cannot call a function that needs an argument. You meet the x86-64 calling convention, learn how a chain of tiny instruction sequences ending in ret can steer the processor, and locate a usable gadget with standard disassembly tools. You then lay out a working chain in Python and watch it succeed. The later lessons explain the defenses that shaped all of this: non-executable memory, address randomization and position-independent code, plus the idea behind a ret2libc shell. Knowing how these attacks work is what lets you argue for memory-safe code and modern mitigations. All practice stays on a binary you own.
