About this course

Underneath the friendly Mac desktop is a full Unix system, and this course teaches you to use it without fear. You begin in Finder, learning where apps, home folders and protected system files live and how to reveal hidden dot-files. Then you open Terminal, confirm that zsh is your shell and practise pwd, ls, cd, cat, cp, mv, mkdir and man. Homebrew follows: you install it from its official site, add a command-line tool and a graphical app, and check your setup with brew doctor. You read permission strings, lock a file with chmod 600 and see whether your account may use sudo. You also check that Gatekeeper and System Integrity Protection are switched on, look at privacy permissions and test your network from the command line.
