How Blockchains Work by Hand: Ledgers, Toy Hashes & Chained Blocks, Merkle Trees, Proof-of-Work Targets, Difficulty Adjustment, Unspent Outputs & Fee Markets
Rebuild the mechanics of a blockchain in a spreadsheet. You will keep a shared ledger and catch double spends, chain blocks with a toy hash and detect tampering, build a Merkle tree and a proof path, search a given nonce table for a hash below the target, adjust difficulty from block times, track unspent outputs and change, pack a block by fee rate and model a halving issuance schedule, all with toy numbers and every cell checked as you go.
- One-time payment
- 14-day money-back guarantee
- Secure checkout with Stripe
What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Turn a log of ten transfers into received, sent and final balances with SUMIFS, then replay the log in order with growing ranges and flag the transfer where Ana spends points she does not have yet.
- Recompute a toy hash for each of eight blocks from its data and stored previous hash, compare it with the stored hash, check every link to the previous block and find the first block someone edited.
- Build a Merkle tree over six transaction hashes, pair the odd node with itself, compute the root and walk a three-step proof that Tx 5 is in the block without looking at the other transactions.
- Test twenty given nonce hashes against a target, find the first valid nonce with MINIFS, calculate the chance that a single try succeeds and the expected number of tries.
- Add up the block times of a twelve-block window, compare them with the target, clamp the adjustment factor between 0.8 and 1.25 and set the new difficulty and target.
- Add up Mia's unspent outputs, look up the two outputs she spends, send the change back to her and find the fee hidden in a transaction where the change was forgotten.
- Turn fees into fee rates, rank twelve waiting transactions, fill a 1,000-unit block from the top of the ranking and estimate in which block a low-fee transaction will finally be included.
- Model Ledgerwood's issuance schedule with POWER and INT, add up the supply towards its limit, compare the reward value per block with a fictional energy cost and chart both lines.
About this course
Behind every blockchain sits a small set of rules you can check with plain arithmetic and toy numbers. You derive balances from a shared transaction log and replay it in order to catch a double spend. A simple modulo hash links blocks, so altering one record breaks the chain visibly. You pair hashes into a Merkle tree and verify a transaction with a short proof path, then search a given nonce table for a value below the mining target and adjust difficulty from observed block times. Unspent outputs, change and implied fees follow, and waiting transactions are ranked by fee rate. A halving schedule models total supply. Educational only, with no prediction of prices or returns.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
