Load Balancing & Hashing by Hand: Round Robin, Weighted & Least-Connections Rules, Hash Mod N, Consistent Hashing Rings & Capacity Headroom

Understand how requests are spread across servers. You will distribute requests round robin and by weights, simulate least-connections choices, map keys to servers with hash mod N, measure how many keys move when a server is added, place servers and keys on a consistent-hashing ring, balance it with virtual nodes and size the pool with headroom, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Hand out 12 requests round robin to three servers with MOD, count what each server receives, work out how long each one is busy and see why equal shares are unfair when one server is slower.
  • Give three servers the weights 5, 3 and 2, calculate their expected shares, assign 15 requests with a weighted cycle and cumulative weights, and measure how far the actual shares are from the plan.
  • Step through ten arrivals under the least-connections rule: open connections change as requests finish and arrive, you pick the server with the fewest open connections, count where the requests went and check how balanced the pool ends up.
  • Place twelve keys on four servers with hash mod N, look up the server names, count the keys per server and measure how uneven the split is.
  • Add a fifth server to a hash-mod-N pool, recalculate the server of every key, mark the keys that move and compare the share that moves with the minimum that would have been necessary.
  • Place three servers and twelve keys on a ring from 0 to 999, give every key to the next server clockwise with MINIFS and a wrap-around, let a fourth server join and count how few keys move.
  • Give each of three servers three positions on the ring, calculate the arc every position owns, add the arcs up per server, measure the imbalance and compare the spread of the shares for different numbers of virtual nodes.
  • Size Wrenfield's pool for its peak with a target utilisation, add one spare server, calculate the utilisation per hour with all servers up and after one failure, the headroom that is left and chart both curves.

About this course

How does a fleet of servers decide who handles the next request, and what happens when one more server joins? This course answers both with spreadsheet simulations. You assign requests round robin with MOD, add weights and measure the error of a weighted cycle, then pick servers by least connections with MIN and MATCH. Next you map keys to servers with hash mod N and count how many keys move when the pool grows. Consistent hashing places servers and keys on a ring, and virtual nodes even out the arcs. The final lab sizes the pool for a target utilisation with N + 1 headroom and shows the load after a failure. Each lab checks your cells. For developers, SREs and system-design learners.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
