Error Detection & Correction by Hand: Parity Bits, Check Digits, Checksums, CRC Division & Hamming Codes
Learn how data protects itself against mistakes. You will add parity bits, compute and verify check digits, sum checksums, run CRC long division bit by bit, encode and decode Hamming codes that find and fix a flipped bit, and compare how much protection each method buys for its overhead, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Split a sent frame into single bits, compare it with the received frame, find the flipped bits and the burst they form, and estimate how many bits a noisy link flips per day.
- Add even and odd parity bits to four code words, build a column parity row for a 2-D grid, and check a received word – then see a double error slip through.
- Compute check digits for fictional sensor IDs with a doubling rule and with weighted mod 11, then show that the weighted scheme catches two swapped digits.
- Compute a simple checksum and a check byte for eight data bytes, a simplified ones'-complement checksum with a folded carry, and find a two-byte error that the simple checksum cannot see.
- Build the XOR truth table with MOD, XOR a data byte with a mask and back again, and measure the Hamming distance between two code words – the tools the CRC and Hamming labs need.
- Run a CRC as long division: find the leading bit of each step, XOR the generator into the message row by row, read the 3-bit remainder as the CRC and let the receiver judge a damaged frame.
- Complete the encoder of a Hamming(7,4) code, compute the syndrome of a damaged word, read the position of the flipped bit from it and correct it.
- Compare six ways of protecting 4 data bits: their code rate and overhead, how many errors each detects and corrects, and a chart of the code rates.
About this course
Barcodes, network frames and stored files all carry a few extra digits whose only job is to reveal mistakes. Here you calculate those digits yourself, one bit at a time. You flip bits in strings and estimate expected error counts, add even and odd parity and see which errors a single parity bit misses before moving to two-dimensional grids. Check digits with the doubling rule and weighted mod 11 catch swapped digits, and byte checksums show their blind spots. XOR is rebuilt from MOD, Hamming distance is measured, and CRC remainders come out of MOD-2 long division. Hamming(7,4) encoding and its syndrome locate and correct a flipped bit, and a chart compares code rates with protection. For students of computing, networking and electronics.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
