Number Systems for Computing: Binary, Hexadecimal, Bit Flags, Two's Complement, Fixed & Floating Point and Storage Units

Learn how computers store numbers by converting them yourself: decimal, binary and hexadecimal, bit flags, two's complement, fixed and floating point and storage units, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Turn a sensor reading into binary by dividing by 2 again and again, read the remainders as bits, and turn an 8-digit binary text back into a decimal number with MID and POWER.
  • Write a status byte as two hex digits and as 8 bits through a nibble lookup table, split a display colour code into its red, green and blue values, and write the same byte in octal.
  • Split six status bytes into eight yes/no flags, count the devices with a low battery, set the alarm bit on one device and clear the update bit on another – without double-counting a bit that is already set.
  • Work out the signed range of 8-, 16- and 32-bit values, store negative sensor offsets as bytes from 0 to 255 and decode bytes from a log back into signed values.
  • Find the largest unsigned value for common bit widths, the bits a value needs, what a full counter shows after more events, and how many packets arrived when an 8-bit counter has rolled over.
  • Find the resolution of a sensor that sends sixteenths of a degree, store six temperatures as integers, decode them again and measure the rounding error each one picks up.
  • Decode the exponent and mantissa fields of 8-bit toy floating-point patterns, turn a pattern into its value, and find the nearest value the format can store for 0.1.
  • Explain why a 512 GB drive shows less, size a raw camera snapshot in KiB, decode one character of a display message through a code table and work out how many bytes the message needs with the shortest fixed-length code.

About this course

Every byte in a computer is just a pattern of bits, and once you convert a few by hand the mystery goes away. This course has you do exactly that. You convert decimal to binary by repeated division and back, then group bits into nibbles for hexadecimal and octal and read colour codes. Bit-flag labs read, set and clear status bits with masks. You decode signed bytes in two's complement, find maximum values and the bits a number needs, and watch counters roll over. Fixed-point labs cover scaling, resolution and rounding error, and a toy 8-bit floating-point format shows why 0.1 cannot be stored exactly. The last lab compares GB with GiB and counts text in bytes. For IT learners, students and junior developers.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
