Workplace Safety Metrics: TRIR, LTIFR, Severity Rates & Leading Indicators

Measure safety performance like an HSE analyst: hours worked and the incident log, TRIR on the 200,000-hour base, LTIFR per million hours, DART and severity rates, the cost of incidents, leading vs lagging indicators with CORREL, site benchmarks with conditional formatting and a 12-month rolling trend chart – 8 labs on one fictional company, every cell checked instantly. Educational only, no affiliation with OSHA, ILO or any regulator.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Total the hours worked at four sites, flag which cases in the incident log are recordable and count recordables and lost-time cases per site.
  • Calculate the Total Recordable Incident Rate per site and for the company, show why the 200,000 base means "per 100 full-time workers" and turn a TRIR target into a case limit.
  • Calculate the Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate on the 1,000,000-hour base, the same cases on the 200,000-hour base, and convert a peer figure so you compare like with like.
  • Calculate the DART rate, the severity rate and the average days lost per lost-time case for each site and for the company.
  • Cost the 13 recordable cases: wage cost of days away, direct cost, total cost with an indirect multiplier, the extra revenue needed to pay for them and the average cost of a lost-time case.
  • Compare three leading indicators (near-miss reports, inspections, training completion) with the monthly recordables: the near-miss ratio, the inspection completion rate and the correlation of each indicator with recordables.
  • Compare ten group sites with the benchmark for their sector: TRIR per site, the benchmark by lookup, an Above/OK flag, a conditional-formatting rule that colours the rows above benchmark and a count of those sites.
  • Calculate the monthly TRIR and a 12-month rolling TRIR for 2026, chart both and read the trend.

About this course

Safety statistics are only meaningful when calculated consistently. This course shows how. Starting from hours worked and an incident log, you calculate the total recordable incident rate per 200,000 hours and the lost-time injury frequency rate per million hours. Severity rate, DART rate and days per lost-time case add depth. You estimate the direct and indirect cost of incidents and the revenue needed to cover them, then relate leading indicators such as observations and training to lagging outcomes with correlation. Sites are compared against benchmarks with flags, and twelve-month rolling rates are plotted on a trend chart. For safety officers, HSE managers and operations leaders.
