Acoustics & Decibels: Sound Levels, Adding Sources & Noise Exposure
Work with sound the way acousticians do: sound pressure level with 20·LOG10(p/p₀), adding sources the energy way and removing background noise, −6 dB per doubling of distance with a chart, daily noise dose with Leq and LEX,8h, permissible exposure times under the 3 dB and 5 dB exchange rates, Sabine reverberation time, absorption upgrades and the wavelength of sound – 8 labs for one fictional acoustics consultancy, every cell checked instantly. Educational only: exposure limits are cited in general terms, check the rules that apply to you.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Turn eight RMS sound pressures into decibels with 20·LOG10(p/p₀), go back from a level to pascals and count the sources at or above 85 dB.
- Add six machine levels the energy way, see what switching one machine off does, and subtract the background noise from a measurement.
- Calculate how a generator's level falls with distance as a point source and as a line source, chart both, and find the distance where the level meets a night limit.
- Time-weight a press operator's six activities into an energy dose, calculate the shift Leq and the 8-hour exposure LEX,8h, and find which activity causes most of the dose.
- Calculate how long a worker may stay at eight levels under a 3 dB and a 5 dB halving rule and turn two hours at 95 dB(A) into a daily dose.
- Calculate a music room's volume, the absorption of five surfaces and the reverberation time RT60 with the Sabine formula.
- Compare three acoustic treatments for the music room: added absorption, the new RT60 and the drop in reverberant level, and pick the option that meets the 0.8 s target on its own.
- Convert eight octave-band frequencies into wavelength and period, chart wavelength against frequency, and correct the speed of sound for temperature.
About this course
Why do two 85 dB machines make only 88 dB together? This course answers that and the other surprises of logarithmic sound levels with your own calculations. You convert sound pressure in pascals into decibels, add and subtract sources, and apply the six-decibel drop per doubling of distance. Then you calculate an equivalent continuous level and a daily exposure over an eight-hour shift, and compare allowable exposure times under 3 dB and 5 dB exchange rates. Room labs estimate reverberation time with the Sabine formula and show how added absorption shortens it. A final lab links frequency and wavelength. Useful for students, technicians, event and building professionals who work with noise figures.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
