Earthquake Seismology: Magnitudes, Energy, Epicentres & Recurrence
Calculate earthquakes the way seismologists do: seismic moment and moment magnitude Mw, energy ratios of 10^(1.5ΔM), P and S travel times with a travel-time chart and distance from the S−P interval, locating an epicentre by a grid search with INDEX and MATCH, the Gutenberg–Richter b-value with SLOPE and a trendline chart, recurrence intervals and the Poisson chance of at least one event, Omori aftershock decay and an illustrative intensity attenuation – 8 labs on one fictional seismic network, every cell checked instantly. Educational only, not a hazard assessment.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Calculate the seismic moment of six fault ruptures from area, slip and rigidity, turn it into moment magnitude Mw and go back from a magnitude to the moment.
- Turn eight magnitudes into radiated energy and TNT equivalents, compare them with a reference event, and see the difference between the energy ratio and the amplitude ratio.
- Calculate P and S travel times for six distances, chart the travel-time curves, and turn four stations' S−P intervals into distances to the earthquake.
- Turn three stations' S−P intervals into distances, test 20 candidate epicentres on a grid by their distance misfit, and let INDEX and MATCH pick the best one.
- Take the log of a 20-year catalogue's cumulative counts, fit the a- and b-values with INTERCEPT and SLOPE, chart the relation with a trendline and extrapolate to M 6.
- Turn the regional Gutenberg–Richter values into annual rates and recurrence intervals, calculate the Poisson chance of at least one event in 50 years, and derive the classic 475-year return period.
- Apply the modified Omori law to a fictional M 6.4 mainshock: the aftershock rate on each of the first ten days, the expected count per day by integration, the 10-day total and the day the rate drops below 10 per day.
- Calculate the hypocentral distance and an illustrative intensity for eight towns, translate it into perceived shaking with an approximate VLOOKUP, and count the towns with strong shaking.
About this course
From fault size to felt shaking, this course follows an earthquake through the calculations seismologists use. You compute moment magnitude from rupture area and slip, then see why one magnitude step means about 32 times more energy. P and S wave travel times give a distance from the S−P interval, and three stations plus a grid search pin down the epicentre. You fit the Gutenberg-Richter relation to a catalogue to estimate a and b, convert rates into recurrence intervals and the chance of at least one event, and model aftershock decay with Omori's law. A final lab sketches shaking intensity against distance with an illustrative attenuation curve. For geoscience students, teachers and science enthusiasts; not a hazard assessment tool.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
