Auto Repair Workshop Economics: Job Cards, Technician Productivity & Efficiency, Bay Utilisation, Labour and Parts Pricing, Comebacks, Seasonal Tyre Service and Break-Even

Run an independent repair workshop on numbers instead of gut feeling. You will cost job cards against estimates, measure technician productivity and efficiency, fill bays and lifts, check the effective labour rate, price parts with a matrix, count the cost of comebacks, plan the seasonal tyre rush and storage and find break-even sold hours, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Price ten closed job cards: labour on the quoted hours, parts, a consumables charge and the invoice total, then measure by job type how far the real hours ran over the quote.
  • Turn a month of attended, clocked and sold hours into productivity, efficiency and the overall rate for five technicians and the whole workshop, and find the best overall performer with a formula.
  • Compare the hours your bays could work with the hours that were booked, find the week's utilisation and the bottleneck days, and turn opening hours into whole booking slots.
  • Calculate the effective labour rate of a month, compare it with the posted rate and find which kind of work pulls it down the most.
  • Price eight parts with a markup matrix (XLOOKUP approximate match), total the parts sales, turn markup into gross margin and see what the workshop gives up when a customer brings their own part.
  • Measure the rework rate by job type and for the workshop, price the comebacks in unbilled hours and written-off parts, compare that with the sales a full workshop loses, and sort the comebacks in a Pareto chart.
  • Turn ten weeks of tyre-change bookings into fitter hours and the staff needed in the peak week, count the sets to store against the rack places and price the storage season.
  • Build the monthly P&L logic of the workshop: contribution per sold hour from labour and parts, break-even sold hours, the profit today and with one more technician, and a chart that compares the two.

About this course

In this course you run a fictional independent repair workshop in a spreadsheet. You price job cards on quoted hours with parts and consumables and measure the overrun by job type with SUMIFS. You turn attended, clocked and sold hours into productivity, efficiency and the overall rate, then compare booked with available bay hours and highlight bottleneck days. You calculate the effective labour rate, price parts with an XLOOKUP markup matrix and turn markup into margin. You cost comebacks, plan the autumn tyre rush and rack storage, and finish with break-even sold hours and the profit of adding one technician.
