Carbon Credits & Offset Projects by the Numbers: Baselines, Buffers, Vintages, Issuance & Cost per Tonne
Follow a carbon credit from the project baseline to its retirement: reductions, deductions, vintages, project cash flow and a buyer's cost per tonne, with every cell checked as you go.
- One-time payment
- 14-day money-back guarantee

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Turn six years of monitoring data from a fictional methane-capture project into baseline emissions, project emissions and emission reductions in tonnes of CO2e, and you work out the pooled share of the baseline that the project avoids.
- Apply the fictional standard's three deductions – leakage, an uncertainty discount and a buffer contribution – to six years of reductions, round to whole credits and report the pooled issuance rate.
- Date eight monitoring periods with EDATE, estimate when their credits are issued with WORKDAY, add up the credits by vintage year with SUMIFS and DATE, and measure the share a picky buyer accepts.
- Build eight years of project cash flow from credits, a fictional credit price, issuance fees and monitoring costs, discount it to an NPV and solve for the credit price at which the project just breaks even.
- Price a fictional buyer's portfolio of eight credit lots: the tonne-weighted average price, the average price of removal credits, a tonne-weighted quality score, and a rule that flags the lots below the quality bar.
- Keep Brightwater's credit inventory by vintage: remaining balances, a helper column, the oldest vintage that still holds credits (SMALL) and the part of a new retirement it can cover (INDEX/MATCH).
- Stress-test three fictional forward contracts: delivered tonnes under a chosen scenario (XLOOKUP), the cash paid with prepayments, the portfolio cost per tonne that really arrives and the shortfall against the programme's need.
- Finish Brightwater's dashboard: remaining credits per vintage, the average cost per tonne bought, the pooled cost per tonne retired and a column chart of credits bought vs retired by vintage.
About this course
A carbon credit passes through several calculations before anyone can retire it, and each one changes how many tonnes exist and what they cost. This course traces that path with a fictional project. You compare baseline and project emissions to get reductions in tonnes of CO2e, then deduct leakage, uncertainty and a buffer and round to whole credits. You assign monitoring periods to vintages and issuance dates, model project cash flow with NPV and a break-even credit price, and assess a buyer's portfolio by avoidance versus removal, weighted price and quality score. A retirement ledger retires oldest vintages first, and forward-contract labs measure delivery shortfalls. Useful for sustainability analysts and students. Illustrative only, not investment advice.
