Product Carbon Footprint: Life-Cycle Stages, Emission Factors, Hotspots & Eco-Design

Calculate a fictional kettle's footprint from cradle to grave: functional unit and reference flow, bill of materials with scrap, factory energy allocation, tonne-kilometres, a use phase on a falling grid factor, end of life with recycling credits, hotspots and a redesign check against a target, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Turn three kettles with different lifetimes and efficiencies into the same functional unit (ten years of boiled water for one household) and find out which one really has the lowest footprint.
  • Turn the Aurel's bill of materials into purchased material (including production scrap), look up an emission factor for every material and find the materials footprint and the share of the steel body.
  • Turn a year of plant electricity and gas into kg CO2e, share it between three products by machine hours and by mass, and see how much the allocation key moves the kettle's footprint.
  • Calculate the tonne-kilometres of each transport leg from factory to shop, apply mode factors with a lookup, add up the distribution footprint per kettle and test what one rush shipment by air would do.
  • Calculate the kettle's electricity per year, let the grid factor fall year by year, sum the use-phase footprint over the six-year life and value what users would save by boiling only the water they need.
  • Split every material into recycled, incinerated and landfilled shares, calculate the end-of-life emissions with the cut-off approach and report the recycling credit separately as a net figure.
  • Sum a line-item inventory into five life-cycle stages, calculate the share of each stage, chart the stages and highlight every stage above 10% of the footprint: the hotspots where redesign pays off.
  • Put the Aurel and the redesigned Aurel Eco on the same functional unit, calculate the change per stage and in total, and decide whether the redesign meets Kettlewick's 30% reduction target.

About this course

How much CO2e does one product cause from raw material to disposal? You find out by building a cradle-to-grave model. A functional unit and reference flow make two products comparable. Materials are costed in emissions from a bill of materials and emission factors with scrap, factory energy is allocated by machine hours and by mass, and distribution is calculated in tonne-kilometres, where air freight quickly dominates. The use phase applies a declining grid factor over the product's life, and end of life covers recycling, incineration, landfill and avoided-burden credits. A hotspot analysis shows which stage matters most, and an eco-design comparison tests a redesign per functional unit. For sustainability teams, product designers, engineers and environmental students; illustrative factors only.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
