What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Project Juniper Roast's savings plan with FV, compare end- and start-of-month deposits, and find the lump sum needed today with PV.
- Calculate the monthly payment on Juniper's roaster loan, split the first year into interest and principal, roll the balance forward and get year-2 interest with CUMIPMT.
- Uncover the real interest rate behind a van financing offer (with and without a balloon) and find how many months a credit line takes to repay.
- Value Juniper's planned café with NPV, rebuild XNPV by hand from the real dates and see why the two results differ.
- Calculate the café's return three ways: IRR on yearly periods, XIRR on the real dates and a modified IRR that reinvests the cash at a realistic rate.
- Build a depreciation schedule for Juniper's new roaster with four Excel methods and chart how they spread the cost over six years.
- Compare three cash-reserve offers on their effective rate, convert a target effective rate back to a nominal rate and see how the day-count basis changes the interest on a short loan.
- Compare two growth projects for Juniper Roast on NPV, IRR and profitability index, pick one with a formula and chart the cash flows.
About this course
Excel's financial functions are powerful but easy to misuse, and a wrong sign or wrong date can change a decision. You start with FV, PV and the sign convention that trips up most users, then build an amortisation table with PMT, IPMT and PPMT. RATE and NPER solve for the interest rate or the number of periods. You compare NPV with XNPV on dated cash flows and see how IRR, XIRR and MIRR differ when cash flows are irregular or reinvested. Depreciation is calculated with SLN, DB, DDB and SYD, and EFFECT and NOMINAL convert between interest rate conventions with a look at day counts. The capstone compares investments on a dashboard. For finance students, analysts and accountants.
