Amateur Radio Antenna & Feedline Math: Wavelengths, Dipole & Vertical Lengths, SWR & Mismatch Loss, Coax Loss, ERP and Logbook Statistics
Do the maths behind a radio station. You will convert frequency to wavelength, cut dipoles and verticals with a velocity factor, compute reflection coefficient, SWR and mismatch loss, estimate coax loss for fictional cable types, find the power reaching the antenna and the effective radiated power, convert grid locators with a lookup table and analyse your contacts log, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Turn nine practice frequencies into wavelengths and half waves, count the channels whose wavelength is above 10 m and work back from a wavelength to the frequency of the club beacon.
- Cut a half-wave dipole and a quarter-wave vertical for five channels with an end-effect factor, then trim a dipole that resonates too low: new total length and the piece to cut off at each end.
- Compute the reflection coefficient and the SWR for six resistive loads on a 50 Ω line, flag the loads above the fictional radio's limit and turn a meter reading back into |Γ|.
- Turn five SWR values into |Γ|, the reflected power share, the mismatch loss in dB and the watts the load accepts from 100 W forward power.
- Look up the loss per 100 m for five cable runs in a two-way table, add the connector losses and work out how many watts reach the antenna and what share is lost.
- Convert five transmitter powers to dBm, combine cable loss and antenna gain into a net gain against a dipole and calculate the effective radiated power in watts and dBm.
- Decode six-character grid locators into longitude and latitude with MID and a letter table instead of CODE, then compute the great-circle distance from the club with the haversine formula and ATAN.
- Summarise Nell's 20 October contacts by band, count the evening contacts per band with COUNTIFS, find the station of the longest contact with INDEX/MATCH and chart the contacts per band.
About this course
A radio station's performance depends on a chain of small calculations from frequency to radiated power. This course walks through that chain. You convert frequency to wavelength and plan a practice channel list, then cut half-wave dipoles and quarter-wave verticals with end effect and trimming. You derive reflection coefficient and SWR from a load, read a meter backwards and express mismatch loss in decibels with LOG10. Coax loss from a fictional cable table shows how many watts reach the antenna. Converting watts to dBm and dBi to dBd leads to effective radiated power. Grid locators become coordinates and distances, and a logbook analysis of contacts per band closes the course. Every lab checks your cells.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
