PLC Logic by Hand: Contacts & Coils, Seal-In Circuits, the Scan Cycle, Edge Detection, Timers, Counters, Step Sequences & Alarm Handling
Think like a controller, one scan at a time. You will write contacts and coils as 0/1 cells, build start/stop seal-in circuits, solve rungs in scan order, catch rising and falling edges, run on-delay, off-delay and retentive timers, count parts, step a toy machine through a sequence and latch, acknowledge and rank alarms, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Solve four rungs of a toy filling station for 12 recorded input states: normally open and normally closed contacts as 0/1 cells, series as AND, parallel as OR, one exclusive OR, and a count of how often each coil switches on.
- Run a toy conveyor motor through 12 scans of start and stop presses: first without a holding contact, then as a reset-dominant and a set-dominant seal-in, and count where the two versions disagree.
- Solve the same two rungs of a toy sorting conveyor in two orders, count the scans in which the lamp lags one scan behind the motor, and turn measured scan times into simplified worst-case response times.
- Catch the rising and falling edges of a held push button and a bottle sensor over 14 scans and see why counting edges instead of held scans counts every press and every bottle exactly once.
- Run three toy timers over 10 scans of a fill request with uneven scan times: an on-delay that resets when the request drops, an off-delay that keeps its output on after the request drops, and a retentive timer that keeps its time until a reset.
- Count bottles on a toy packing conveyor over 18 scans – up on the part sensor's rising edges, down on the reject sensor's, with a reset – split the count into boxes with MOD and total three shifts from a counter that wraps around.
- Step a fictional mixing tank through Idle, Fill, Mix and Drain over 10 scans: each scan looks up the transition condition of the active step, the outputs come from a step table and the step times are counted from the sequence table.
- Run a toy labelling machine through 10 scans: latch three alarms until they are acknowledged, pack them into an alarm word, find the first-out alarm and the activations, gate the start with a permissive and follow the machine state scan by scan.
About this course
Ladder diagrams make sense once you watch every scan. This course turns rungs into 0/1 formulas on toy machines. You combine normally open and normally closed contacts in series and parallel, then latch a conveyor motor with a holding contact and see which command wins when start and stop coincide. Two rung orders reveal the one-scan lag, and measured scan times give a worst-case reaction. One-shots catch each press exactly once, three timer types run on uneven scan times, and an up/down counter tracks bottles with presets and wrap-around. A mixing tank steps through numbered states, and a labelling machine latches, acknowledges and ranks alarms. A learning model, not a guide for real installations. For apprentices, technicians and automation beginners.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
