Complex Numbers in Spreadsheets: Rectangular & Polar Form, Arithmetic, Powers & Roots, Rotations and AC Phasors

Make complex numbers concrete with two columns. You will add, multiply and divide numbers written as real and imaginary parts, convert to modulus and angle, multiply in polar form, raise to powers and take roots with De Moivre, rotate shapes in the plane and solve simple AC circuits with phasors, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Store six complex numbers as real and imaginary columns, write their conjugates, show that z · z̄ is always a real number, name the quadrant of each point and count the numbers above the real axis.
  • Add, multiply and divide four pairs of complex numbers part by part, so every result is again a real column and an imaginary column.
  • Compute the modulus of seven numbers with SQRT, see where plain ATAN goes wrong, build an argument formula that is right in all four quadrants and on the axes, and convert it to radians.
  • Turn two numbers given as modulus and angle into rectangular parts, multiply them with the polar rule, and confirm that the rectangular rule from lesson 2 gives the same product.
  • Raise z = 1.1∠50° to the powers 1 to 8 with De Moivre's rule and find all four fourth roots of w = 16∠120°, spaced evenly around a circle.
  • Build the multiplier m = 1.5∠30°, apply it to every corner of a house-shaped logo, and draw the turned and enlarged outline as a scatter chart.
  • Classify six quadratic equations by their discriminant, compute the centre and spread of their roots, and prove one complex root correct by putting it back into the equation.
  • Treat impedances as complex numbers: the size and phase angle of five series circuits, their currents, and the combined impedance of two branches in parallel.

About this course

Complex numbers become far less mysterious once each one is just a pair of cells. This course builds that intuition step by step. You plot numbers on the complex plane with real and imaginary columns, find conjugates and work through sums, products and division by the conjugate. Then you compute modulus and argument with a proper quadrant correction and switch between degrees and radians. Polar form shows why multiplying means scaling lengths and adding angles. De Moivre's rule gives powers, n-th roots and roots of unity, and multiplying a shape by a complex number rotates it. Quadratics with negative discriminants and AC impedance in series and parallel close the course. Every lab checks your cells.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
