Radioactivity & Decay Calculations: Half-Life, Activity & Dosimetry Basics
The decay law and λ from the half-life, activity in becquerel and curie, the remaining fraction after n half-lives, radiocarbon ages, parent–daughter ingrowth, the inverse-square law and half-value layers, simple dose estimates and Tc-99m ordering, with half-lives from the IAEA nuclide chart in a live spreadsheet that checks every cell. Educational only, not radiation-safety or medical guidance.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Turn the half-life of iodine-131 into a decay constant, tabulate the undecayed nuclei of a sample over 32 days in two equivalent ways and find when only 1% is left.
- Convert the mass of four sealed sources into atoms, multiply by the decay constant per second to get the activity in becquerel and convert it to microcurie.
- Tabulate the fraction and activity of a cobalt-60 check source over ten half-lives, work out when it falls below a usable level with a base-2 log and chart the decay curve.
- Turn the measured C-14 activity of five museum samples into a fraction of modern carbon, calculate the age with the physical half-life and as a conventional radiocarbon age, and find the oldest age the method can reach.
- Model how yttrium-90 grows into freshly purified strontium-90 with a simple day-by-day step table, compare it with the ingrowth formula and chart the approach to secular equilibrium.
- Calculate how the dose rate of a Cs-137 point source falls with distance and with lead thickness, how much lead brings it to a target, and the dose rate at a work position that uses both.
- Estimate a technician's weekly dose from dose rates and times, scale it to a year, compare it with natural background and work out how much hot-cell time is left within a weekly constraint.
- Work out how much Tc-99m a fictional clinic must order for six scheduled injections, accounting for decay between calibration and each injection time, add a reserve, and compare with F-18 lost during transport.
About this course
Half-life problems become simple once the decay law is in a table you control. In this course you derive the decay constant from the half-life, apply the exponential law and calculate activity in becquerel and curie, including specific activity. You chart the remaining fraction over successive half-lives, date a sample from its remaining carbon-14 and follow a parent decaying into its daughter step by step. Two labs treat distance and shielding with the inverse-square law and half-value layers, and add dose rate over time for a simple annual comparison. Finally you plan orders of short-lived medical isotopes so enough remains on delivery. Useful for physics and chemistry students, radiography trainees and lab technicians. Dose figures are educational, not safety guidance.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
