Control Systems by Hand: Open & Closed Loops, First- and Second-Order Responses, Steady-State Error, Dead Time, Stability Checks, Frequency Response in Decibels & Tuning Tables

See why feedback works and when it goes wrong. You will compare open and closed loops, simulate first- and second-order step responses, read overshoot and settling time, compute steady-state error under proportional control, add dead time, check stability from characteristic roots, tabulate magnitude and phase in decibels with margins and apply a tuning table to a toy process, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Run a toy heater open loop and with proportional feedback, compute both outputs under a draught and an aged heater element, the error the closed loop still leaves and how much less the closed loop reacts to a gain change.
  • Simulate the heater block step by step after a power step, compare it with the exact curve 1 − EXP(−t/τ), see 63 % at one time constant, compute the time to 98 % and chart both curves.
  • Compute the natural frequency and damping ratio of a toy spring-mounted arm, tabulate its step response with the exact second-order formula, find the overshoot and build a table of overshoot over ζ.
  • Compute the steady-state error and the closed-loop time constant of the heater under P control for four gains, simulate all four step responses side by side and chart them.
  • Delay the heater's power signal by d steps with INDEX, simulate the late response, then compute the pole of a sampled P loop for six sample periods and label each loop smooth, oscillating or unstable.
  • Sweep the controller gain from 0 to 8, compute the coefficients and the discriminant of s² + a·s + b, the real and imaginary parts of the roots in separate columns and flag each gain as stable or unstable.
  • Tabulate magnitude in dB and phase of the heater loop over 18 frequencies, add a sensor lag and a dead time in series, and read the gain margin and the phase margin off the table with MATCH.
  • Turn a fictional oscillation test into P and PI settings with XLOOKUP on a fictional tuning table, let the prepared simulator run both loops with dead time and compare overshoot and summed absolute error.

About this course

Feedback lets a heater hold its temperature when a door opens, but too much gain makes it oscillate. This course shows both sides with toy models in a spreadsheet. You run a heater with and without a proportional controller under a disturbance, then step a first-order block row by row and check the 63 % mark. A spring-mounted arm yields natural frequency, damping and overshoot. Four controller gains reveal the trade-off between speed and remaining offset, and dead time delays the input step by step. Root locations decide stability across a gain sweep, a Bode-style table gives decibels and phase, and the capstone compares P and PI settings by overshoot and summed error. Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
