The Kalman Filter by Hand: Noisy Measurements, Predict & Update Steps, Kalman Gain, Constant-Velocity Tracking, Sensor Fusion & Tuning

Build the famous estimation filter one cell at a time. You will average noisy readings recursively, add process and measurement noise, run predict and update steps with the Kalman gain, track a moving object with a constant-velocity model written out cell by cell, fuse two sensors by their variances, handle missing readings and tune the filter by error, all with toy data and every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Turn ten noisy level readings into a running average that is updated one reading at a time, check that it equals the plain average, and compare its error with the error of a single reading.
  • Measure the noise of two sensors as a variance, weight their live readings by inverse variance, combine them into one estimate and show that the combined variance is smaller than either sensor's.
  • Run a one-dimensional Kalman filter on twelve tank readings: predict the state and its variance, compute the Kalman gain, update the estimate and the variance, and watch the gain settle.
  • Compute the steady gain for four process-noise settings, measure how far a cautious and a nimble filter lag behind a sudden level jump and chart both against the readings.
  • Run one predict–update step for a toy cart with two states, position and velocity, write the 2×2 covariance prediction out as four cells, compute the velocity gain and correct the velocity from a position-only reading.
  • Fuse a noisy and a precise level sensor in one filter step by two sequential updates, then reach the same estimate and variance in one go with inverse-variance weights.
  • Handle a sensor that sometimes sends nothing and once sends nonsense: compute the innovation variance, decide per step whether to use, skip or reject a reading with a gate of k·√S, and set the gain to zero when the update is skipped.
  • Score five estimators of a toy cart's position by RMSE – a constant-velocity Kalman filter, an alpha–beta filter, two level filters with different Q/R and a moving average – compute the improvement and chart the best filter against the readings.

About this course

The Kalman filter appears in navigation, robotics and finance, but its equations can feel abstract. This course unpacks it into rows and columns you can watch change. Using toy data, you begin with a recursive running average and inverse-variance weighting of two readings. Then you write a one-dimensional filter with predict and update steps and the gain P divided by P plus R. Adjusting process noise against measurement noise shows the trade-off between lag and jitter. You extend the state to position and velocity with a covariance written as four cells, fuse two sensors with different noise and handle missing readings and outliers with a gating rule. Tuning by RMSE closes the course. Every lab checks your cells.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
