Coaching Season Planner: Periodization, Playing Time & Tournament Scheduling

Plan a fictional youth football season like its head coach: phases and fixture weeks, 3:1 load blocks, monotony and strain, fair playing time, squad availability, round-robin fixtures with the circle method, a one-day tournament timetable and a planned-vs-actual load review, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Turn the coach's phase start dates into weeks and end dates, number every fixture by season week, look up the phase it falls in and count the fixtures in the first competition phase.
  • Plan twelve weeks of team training load in four-week blocks with MOD and INT, apply the weekly factors from a table, total the planned load and spot the jump after each deload week.
  • Calculate daily session loads for a varied and a flat training week, their weekly load, mean and standard deviation, the monotony and strain of each week, and flag the week whose monotony is above the warning level.
  • Total each player's minutes, compare them with a fair share of the available player-minutes, count the players below the club's minimum, measure the spread and work out how many minutes per match the least-used player needs to catch up.
  • Count the available players and goalkeepers for each of the next five matches, calculate every player's availability rate and count the players whose availability is low.
  • Work out how many rounds and matches a league needs, how many kick-off slots a match day takes on the available pitches, and generate the full single round robin with one MOD formula.
  • Count the group matches of a one-day tournament, turn them into time slots on the available pitches, calculate when the group stage and the last match end, and find the longest match length that still fits the venue booking.
  • Compare twelve weeks of planned and delivered training load, calculate the deviation per week, count the weeks outside the tolerance band, chart plan against reality and name the week with the biggest overshoot.

About this course

Coaching a team involves more planning than most people expect, from training load to who plays how many minutes. This course turns those tasks into clear calculations. You lay out a season calendar with phases, weeks and fixtures, then plan load in blocks of three building weeks and one lighter week. Monotony and strain show how the same weekly total can feel very different. A playing-time lab tracks minutes against a fair share and suggests catch-up, while an availability check confirms you can field a full squad with a goalkeeper. You generate league fixtures with the circle method, fit a one-day tournament into time slots and review planned against actual load. For volunteer and youth coaches and club organisers.
