Survey Weighting: Post-Stratification, Raking (IPF) & Design Effects

Compare sample and population margins, build post-stratification cell weights, rake a 3 × 3 table to two margins by iterative proportional fitting, trim and rescale extreme weights, compute weighted estimates with SUMPRODUCT, measure Kish's design effect, widen the margin of error and chart the before/after gaps: 8 graded labs on one fictional transit survey. Synthetic data for practice.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Compare the 1,200 interviews of a transit survey with the census margins for age, gender and region, measure every gap and find the group that needs the biggest weight.
  • Build expansion weights and relative weights for nine age × region cells, check that the weighted sample still adds up to 1,200 interviews and find the cells with risky large weights.
  • Rake the 3 × 3 table of interviews to the age margin and the region margin in turn, watch the row sums converge after two rounds and read off a raked weight.
  • Cap raked weights at 0.5 and 2.5, rescale them so they add up to 1,200 interviews again and count how many interviews the trimming touched.
  • Calculate weighted means and shares from respondent records with SUMPRODUCT, including a weighted share for one region, and compare them with the unweighted numbers.
  • Compute Kish's effective sample size and design effect for the raked and the trimmed weights and see how many interviews trimming wins back.
  • Calculate the textbook margin of error, widen it with the design effect of the weights, do the same for the small rural subgroup and report the upper end of the interval.
  • Turn the weighted interviews into weighted shares, measure the absolute gap to the population before and after weighting and chart population, sample and weighted shares side by side.

About this course

When a sample has too many of one group and too few of another, weighting brings it back in line. This course teaches the standard methods step by step. You compare sample and population margins for age, gender and region, then apply cell weights through post-stratification. Raking by iterative proportional fitting adjusts two margins in alternating steps until they match. You trim and cap extreme weights, rescale and see who is affected, and compare weighted with unweighted estimates. Kish's effective sample size and the design effect show the precision cost of weighting, feeding a weighted margin of error for the whole sample and subgroups. For survey researchers, pollsters, market researchers and statistics students.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
