Support Vector Machines by Hand: Separating Lines, Margins, Hinge Loss, Soft Margins, Kernel Tables & Support Vectors
Draw the widest street between two classes. You will score points against a separating line, measure functional and geometric margins, compute the hinge loss, take soft-margin training steps with a fixed learning rate, spot the support vectors, build polynomial and radial kernel tables, classify with given weights per support vector and extend to several classes, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Score ten tiles against a given separating line, turn each score into a predicted class with IF, measure the accuracy and plot the toy data set as a scatter chart.
- Compare two lines that both separate the same ten tiles, measure their functional and geometric margins, and rescale the better line so that its margin width 2 ÷ ‖w‖ can be read off directly.
- Score a new batch of ten tiles with the rescaled line, compute the hinge loss MAX(0, 1 − y·score) for each, label every tile as outside the margin, inside the margin or misclassified and add up the total loss.
- Score three candidate lines on the same eight tiles with the soft-margin objective ½‖w‖² + C·Σ hinge for three values of C and see how the best line changes from wide to narrow as C grows.
- Flag the tiles that violate the margin, take one sub-gradient step for w and b with a fixed learning rate by hand, compute the objective for five epochs of a reference run and chart how it falls.
- Find the tiles that sit on the edge of the street, rebuild the weights from the given α values as Σ α·y·x and the bias from the support vectors alone, and see why all other tiles could be removed without moving the line.
- Lift a ring-shaped toy set into a new feature z = x1² + x2² where one straight cut separates it, then build a polynomial and a radial kernel table that measure similarity without writing out any new features.
- Classify six test tiles with a radial-kernel SVM from four given support vectors and α values, find the tile it gets wrong, then combine three one-vs-rest machines into a glaze-finish classifier and measure its accuracy.
About this course
A support vector machine looks for the widest possible gap between two classes. Here you build that idea from toy data in a spreadsheet. You score points against a candidate line, predict classes by sign and measure functional and geometric margins to read the width of the street. Hinge loss tells you which points sit safely outside, inside the margin or on the wrong side, and the parameter C shows the trade between a wide gap and few violations. You train with sub-gradient steps and chart the objective per epoch, identify the support vectors, map a ring-shaped set with feature maps and fill polynomial and radial kernel tables. One-vs-rest extends the model to several classes.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
