Concrete & Masonry Math: Slabs, Footings, Rebar, Block Walls, Mortar & Pour Quotes
Take off a fictional builder's concrete and masonry work: slab and footing volumes with waste, ready-mix trucks versus bags, rebar grids and weights, formwork, block and brick counts, mortar, cement and sand, and a priced pour quote with a chart, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Turn five slabs measured in metres and millimetres into cubic metres, add a waste allowance, round up to the supplier's order step and convert the order into cubic yards.
- Take off strip footings and square pads as boxes and round piers as cylinders with PI, total the volume, see how much sits in the piers and turn the volume into tonnes for the crane and the trucks.
- Count truck loads with ROUNDUP, find the size of the last load and charge a short-load fee when it is too small, count bags from the bag yield and decide pour by pour whether the truck or the bags are cheaper.
- Count the bars in a two-way grid from the spacing and the cover, add a lap where a bar is longer than the stock length, total the metres and turn them into kilograms with a lookup of kg per metre.
- Measure the edges that really need a form (the perimeter minus edges that sit against existing work), turn them into form area, count stakes and order release agent in whole cans.
- Measure block walls net of openings, work out blocks per square metre from the block size plus the mortar joint, order whole blocks with a breakage allowance and calculate the grout to fill the cores of a retaining wall.
- Count bricks for a facade from the brick size in millimetres plus joints, then turn the bricks into wet mortar, dry materials, cement bags and tonnes of sand from a 1:4 mix.
- Price the garage slab pour from your takeoffs: labour hours from crew productivity, direct cost, overhead and profit markup, a rounded quote price, the cost per category and a pie chart for the client meeting.
About this course
Ordering too little concrete stops a pour; ordering too much wastes money. This course trains the takeoffs that get it right. You calculate slab volumes with waste and round to the supplier's order step, then size strip footings, pads and round piers. A supply lab compares ready-mix trucks, including short-load fees, with bagged concrete. You count rebar for a grid with laps and convert it to weight, measure formwork edges and area, and take off block walls with openings, blocks per square metre and core grout. Brick labs cover bricks per square metre, mortar mix ratios, cement bags and sand. The final lab prices the pour with labour, overhead and markup. For builders, apprentices and estimators.
