Game Economy Design: Faucets & Sinks, Drop Rates, Progression Curves & Monetisation

Model the economy of a fictional mobile RPG: currency faucets and sinks and inflation, exponential vs polynomial XP curves with a chart, drop rates and pity timers, completing a gacha collection, crafting cost trees, gem-pack pricing, player segments with ARPPU and ARPDAU and a reward table balanced to a target time-to-level: 8 graded labs with synthetic data and a responsible-design view.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Calculate the gold each source creates or removes per player per day, the faucet and sink totals, the sink-to-faucet ratio and how a player's gold pile grows in a month.
  • Build two XP-per-level curves, the cumulative XP of the exponential one, find a player's level from total XP and chart both curves.
  • Calculate expected attempts, the chance of at least one drop in N attempts, the attempts needed for a 90 % chance and the effect of a pity timer.
  • Calculate the chance that the next pull is new, the expected pulls for each new hero, the expected pulls to complete a 12-hero banner and what that would cost in real money.
  • Roll up the gold cost of a three-level crafting tree, count the raw ore inside the final item and the gold the fees remove from the economy.
  • Calculate total gems and gems per USD for each pack, the value compared with the smallest pack, the best-value pack and the gem value of a starter bundle.
  • Calculate each segment's share of revenue, the ARPPU of the paying segments, the game's ARPDAU and chart the revenue mix.
  • Compare XP per minute across activities, calculate a typical player's daily XP and days to level 20, and scale the rewards so the target time is met.

About this course

A game economy that inflates or a level curve that stalls can ruin retention. This course gives designers the maths to prevent both. You track daily currency faucets against sinks to spot inflation, then compare exponential and polynomial XP curves in a chart. Drop rates become expected attempts, and pity timers cap bad luck. You estimate expected pulls to complete a gacha collection, roll up crafting trees into total materials and fees, and price premium currency packs with bonuses by value per unit spent. Player segments are analysed for revenue share, ARPPU and ARPDAU, and a final lab tunes a reward table to hit a target time to level. For game designers, producers, live-ops analysts and game design students.
