Semiconductor Yield Economics: Dies per Wafer, Yield Models & Cost per Chip

Estimate gross dies per wafer, model yield with Poisson, Murphy and negative binomial, cost a good die and a shipped chip after test and packaging, test a die shrink, price speed bins and plan fab utilisation: 8 graded labs on a fictional chip company (illustrative numbers).

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Work out the usable area of a 300 mm wafer and estimate how many whole dies of five designs fit on it, using the standard dies-per-wafer approximation with its edge-loss term.
  • Turn six months of falling defect density into expected defects per die, Poisson die yield, good dies per wafer and the wafers to start for 50,000 good chips.
  • Compare three classic yield models for eight die sizes at the same defect density and chart how yield falls as dies get bigger.
  • Compute good dies, cost per gross and per good die for four products, the yield penalty, and what five extra yield points are worth for the big accelerator.
  • Carry the cost of a good die through wafer probe, packaging and final test, and divide by the yields along the way to get the real cost of each chip you can ship.
  • Shrink the HX-7 to 55 % of its area on a newer, dearer process and compare gross dies, yield, good dies and cost per good die in the first year and once the process has matured.
  • Split a month of HX-7 good dies into speed grades with NORM.DIST, price each bin and find the blended revenue per good die.
  • Size the fab's capacity from its bottleneck lithography tools, turn chip demand into wafer starts, and see how utilisation drives the cost of every wafer.

About this course

The cost of a chip is decided by geometry and probability long before it ships. This course lets you model both. You compute wafer area and gross dies including the edge loss, then estimate yield from defect density with the Poisson model and compare it with Murphy and negative-binomial curves. Dividing wafer cost by good dies gives cost per die, and test and packaging yields carry it through to cost per shipped part. A shrink scenario asks whether a smaller node is cheaper per chip, binning splits output into speed grades for revenue per wafer, and a final lab links fab utilisation to wafer starts. For engineers, analysts and students in the semiconductor industry.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
